SuperUser contributor Rsp goes into great detail explaining the differences between p, i, and when one is preferable over the other. I see a range of problems in the answers and comments here even in some highly-voted answers that provide otherwise very good information that span from minor deficiencies that need explanation to some serious inaccuracies, so I think that some clarification is needed.
The question is specifically: What is the difference between p and i? Some of the information presented below is adapted from my answer to Interlacing on a computer monitor but is rewritten to strictly stick to the subject of the difference between p and i. It is not true that i has a lower vertical resolution than p.

Of course it does, no one disputes proper p50 can provide superb pictures. Thats a hell of a long way from your 2 x p25 posting, if it's a genuine 50fps x recording. It's still a little off the quality of blu-ray p24 with it's near double the bandwidth it can manage. What is pretty damning and amazing is your assertion if you have a P50 camcorder that it needs no more bitrate than the 25fps interlaced or progressive formats, if it delivers twice the video data how does that compute It takes a lot of bandwidth namely 28Mbps vbr to provide fantastic pictures.
As for still pictures you clearly do not understand mpeg compression. A frame capture of a still image is dead easy because there is no difference between the the following frames. If every frame is the same a tiny bitrate will provide perfect pictures.
