If you made your own powdered sugar and only enough for your dessert, there may not be a need for the cornstarch, but more on that later. Here's how it's made: granulated powder is ground into smooth power and then sifted to dispose of the chunky sugar particles.

Powdered or confectioners' sugar is granulated sugar that has been finely ground and mixed with a small amount of cornstarch to prevent caking. This is the sugar we commonly use for frostings, glazes, and that snowy covering on doughnuts that no doubt is all over your face and hands with the first bite. Icing sugar You may have heard that regular white sugar is non- vegan because they filter it using bone char - that is, charred and powdered animal bone.

There is one exception to this, though - icing sugar. It doesn't use bone char but some of the most popular brands of icing sugar contain dried egg white. Moisture or contaminants can cause your powdered food or spices to become clumpy and difficult to use.

In the past, you may have even had to throw out lumpy powdered goods like cocoa, sugar , custard powder , dried milk, packet meals, and more. Powdered sugar is simply made by grinding granulated sugar to a fine powder. So if a recipe calls for confectioners ' sugar , just know that it's actually asking for powdered sugar , which is what you need to use. Granulated sugar on the other hand, does not dissolve easily and offers a more grainy texture.

A more accurate and easier way to substitute the sugars is based on weight, not volume. If a recipe calls for 1 cup of powdered sugar 4 ounces, or grams , you should use 4 ounces of granulated sugar.
