When children are implanted at a young age, chances are good that they'll grow up and understand speech, with little to no need for visual aids. My dad was hearing impaired but left his hearing aid in a drawer. I have the same problem and lost a third of my hearing years ago - maybe more since as I never went to get checked again. As I decided I'd rather go deaf than wear one. Not vanity just I can;t filter out background noise anyway. Mr H used a lot of interesting firearms in his youth so he now has to have a hearing aid.

Smooth and seductive marketing for hearing aids play up the wonderful advantages of hearing aids and their ability to improve communication skills. Almost everyone knows at least one person who hates their hearing aids.
