Azrael is typically portrayed as an antihero and ally of the superhero Batman , though the two have also been at odds due to the former's violent nature and twisted sense of justice indoctrinated by the Order. The character appeared in the Batman: Arkham series of video games, voiced by Khary Payton.
An original iteration of Azrael appeared in the second season of the television series Gotham , portrayed by James Frain. Michael Lane was originally introduced in Batman June as the alter-ego of the supervillain Bat-Devil. In Azrael: Death's Dark Knight 1 May , the character was re-introduced as the current Azrael, as part of Battle for the Cowl , a storyline told in a three-issue miniseries format written by Fabian Nicieza. As Azrael, Jean-Paul Valley has enhanced physical abilities.
He has been shown to fight at heightened levels even when fatigued, a fact exemplified when Azrael was able to defeat Bane, despite suffering from both extreme exhaustion and Venom withdrawal. Azrael is also a superior fighter; although he lacks technique and style in his fighting moves, he makes up for it with his inhuman speed, reflexes, and agility. Azrael has been able to match Deathstroke in a sword duel and has even defeated Batman in hand-to-hand combat.
The original Azrael costume worn by Jean-Paul Valley consists of red and gold armor. After becoming an "Agent of the Bat", he dons silver and black armor with a red cape and a stylized red bat symbol on the chest. Later on, he dons red armor with golden gauntlets, boots, shoulder pads and a blue cape. He sometimes carries a flaming sword and also uses two retractable daggers hidden in the gauntlets of his costume that can be charged with thermal energy to increase their destructive power.

Right at the end of his solo series however, his strength, speed and reflexes went into meta human levels and he no longer needed his costume to access "The System.
As a computer science post-graduate student, his knowledge and expertise with computers surpasses those of Tim Drake 's and is closer in range to those of Oracle , the former Batgirl. He is often described as being an instinctive genius, though he is neither as smart nor as quick as Bruce Wayne.
In addition, he has a rather limited knowledge base with which to apply what would or could be a considerable intelligence. The skills granted to him by "The System" are considerable, giving him access to acrobatic and martial arts skill rare for the most seasoned athlete.
This makes him a highly skilled combatant. In addition to these talents, his skills were honed by training with Bruce Wayne and thus possibly as skilled as Batman, although his lack of experience and finesse would make him the weaker of the two. However due to his physical capabilities in junction with his skill has allowed him to defeat Batman, Bane, Nightwing, and even be offered being the leader of the League of Assassins by Ra's al Ghul. The Michael Lane version of Azrael appears in the game, however his character seems to be an amalgamation of Jean-Paul and Lane's, as is his costume.

It is kind of ridiculous how many important parts of the story that just weren't IN Knightfall. It's just silly.
