I will leave it going while im at work hopefully it might be finished by then. The only thing you did wrong was to have valuable information in exactly and only one place. Depending on the value of the data you may end up needing a data recovery service.

You might try using Process Explorer to see who has something open on D:. It only solves problems related with bad sectors? I remove files, then chkdsk, then defrag if necessary. All this can be found in one place, File Explorer whatever name it has now. Rt-Click the drive Properties midway down you see Drive Cleanup — click next tab Tools There are chkdsk, defrag — click each in sequence. No elevated prompt, less preparation, more familiar Window, same results. I am unsure how to run it if I am the administrator but cannot figure out how to run as administrator as I realize these are 2 different items.

If it is, then the only proper thing to do is to report it to Youtube so they can take it down. How long can I expect this to take. It depends on the speed of the drive and the USB interface. If you have the patience I would let it complete. How much time it took you?
Or how did you solve the problem? My laptop crashed a few days ago while writing to an 8Tb external HD that had about Gb used. At the time I ran chkdsk from Windows Explorer, but the progress bar showed no progress or action even after many hours so I canceled it. After reading this posting I doubt that it stopped chkdsk, probably the cancel button was just to close the window as if one had decided to not start it. I have since shut the computer off several times. I can now read, but not write to the external HD says it is dirty.

If you dropped the drive, the damage could cause that to happen. There are no guarantees it is repairable. After a drop? I also hope that you had your data backed up.
It went by so quickly I never got the actual number of the error. It wanted me to go through a system restore to get it back to a point where the scan could be free to run. Is there a safe, reliable, free alternative to the Windows 7 Pro built-in Scandisk feature that would do the same thing, including making any repairs?

My Macrium Reflect log showed bad sectors in 2 clusters. Your chkdsk article gave clear instructions and Macrium was able to make a successful backup overnight. Thank you very much. In Windows 7, when I access Error Checking via the GUI and not Command Prompt , there is a Check Disk Options box that allows me to choose whether I want the utility to 1 automatically fix file system errors and 2 scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.
My questions are: 1. Let the program run to identify and perhaps repair other sectors, but then immediately BACK UP that disk, and replace it. Membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to run chkdsk. To open a command prompt window as an administrator, right-click Command prompt in the Start menu, and then click Run as administrator.
