By: Debra Ronca Updated: May 14, Lots of chefs do it on television. Your grandma does it while she's cooking.

You see the guy at the pizzeria do it. One time you even saw a woman at a restaurant do it. You might even do it yourself. So many people do it without understanding why, but throwing salt over your shoulder is an old tradition. According to superstition, spilling salt is bad luck and throwing a pinch over your shoulder reverses that bad luck.

Typically, it's thrown over the left shoulder. We don't know exactly when this tradition began, but there are a few explanations about why spilled salt is bad luck. Take a close look at Leonardo da Vinci's painting The Last Supper , and you'll see that Judas Iscariot has knocked over the salt with his elbow. Because Judas betrayed Jesus Christ in the Bible, people began associating salt with lies and disloyalty.

Throwing salt over the left shoulder blinds the devil, who was waiting there to force you into acts of bad behavior as well. Why toss it over the left side? Thanks to this blog I am now spooked that the devil is standing behind me Who knows, maybe now I will start doing this just to keep myself from getting scared every time I spill salt!

I have always been a very superstition person as well, ever since i was young i had been throwing salt over my shoulder becuase my grandma showed me how. Now when you catch yourslef throwing the salt, you will think about this blog. Lauren, i can see your concerns i feel thesame way too but i just cannot help it. I think these things are very interesting I mean who knows what is the truth! Monday, October 14, Throwing salt over the shoulder. It was that kind of weekend, the weekend where all the family comes down to visit and everyone sits down to have a great home cooked meal Unless that is just my want to be Italian family.

So as the salt and pepper shakers come out for the food and as you to salt the vegetables you miss the bowl. So what do you do? Do you throw it in the ground, clean it off or like me, throw the salt over your shoulder. I always put the salt in my hands and throw it over my left shoulder to keep the bad luck away. If this happens, you are instructed to throw the salt over your LEFT shoulder and "hopefully" into the devil's eyes, thus blinding him to your mistake. Throw a pinch over your left shoulder using your right hand.

Because if you spill it, it is bad luck, so to prevent it people throw salt over there left shoulder. You then have salt on the floor. The myth is that if you spill salt, you have to throw some over your left shoulder or you will have bad luck. Although it is just a myth, many people who don't consider themselves superstitious do it anyway, "just in case". The left shoulder. Traditionally and according to superstitions and folklore, the left shoulder. The left. It is said the devil sits over your left shoulder, spilling salt is supposed to bring bad luck upon yourself, and trowing the salt over your left shoulder therefore "blinding" the devil so he doesn't know who to bring the bad luck on.

Of course not. It's all superstition. In fact, according to the superstition, throwing salt over your shoulder counteracts other things that bring bad luck supposedly, like breaking a mirror or spilling salt.
