Which frames use bb30 - vgl

BB30 was originally developed by Cannondale in , but they have since made the dimensions and technical drawing available to any company who would like to use the BB30 standard. PF30a frame shell inner diameter is 46mm. BB30 frame shell inner diameter is 42mm, has two bearing retaining clips and two bearings pressed directly in the frame.

PressFit PF30 bottom brackets are a separate component pressed directly into the frame. The traditional 61x46mm OSBB will always use a plastic insert to fit the bearings in the frame. This setup caused a lot of creaking issues. PF30 shells do not have to have the super tight tolerances that BB30 requires to work correctly.

Press-fit is mainly of the benefit to the manufacturers, not consumers. Our future alloy frames will be PF30 for that reason. The shell supplier to our frame maker moved away from BB30 shells. Fortunately the drawbacks of PF30 versus a real BB30 are just a minor weight increase so we do not feel compelled to insist on BB30 at all costs.

Thank You. The creaking issues are well-documented and have been confirmed by numerous riders over multiple forums who don't have any sort of vested interest in their frame or the BB30 standard. You still gain the higher stiffness of the frame due to larger tube profiles and resultant stronger welds. Post by vmajor on Thu May 03, am Easy there. This is a public forum and not "bones" forum. Besides, my post is a statement of facts as we know them, as makers of the Selene and other frames that use BB We also clearly have a vested interest in BB30, in fact our interest in BB30 is a definition of "vested".

The whole shebang, 3-in-1 Integrated BB Reducer , has got you covered for surely every contingency, should you need it. So, what about threads? The BB30 original concept was to do away with bottom bracket threads altogether. A great idea that proved a little trickier to realize in practice. You can stay with that In other words, you can change out your square taper cartridge bottom bracket and upgrade easily and painlessly.

Check out the video for the complete story told in intimate visual detail. Or proceed with the summary below if you wish to skim through what is involved first.

We assume you know how to remove a square taper BB. If not, or you need a refresher, check out the following:. An essential procedure when installing threaded bottom brackets. Having removed the old bottom bracket there are several steps you need to take to ensure the T30 bearing cups install easily.

I would note that a yearly bottom bracket overhaul should be standard procedure. You should remove your cranks, remove the bottom bracket, remove the old grease from the BB and the BB Shell. Then re-install the lot. Prior to re-greasing the BB shell tap the threads.

This way the BB shell threads will be aligned perfectly with the bearing cups about to be installed. With perfect alignment there is almost no chance at all of cross-threading. Rotate the bearing cup back out it should not be in very far at this stage anyway and start over.

The externally located bearing cups interface directly with the BB shell. The bearing cups are precisely machined so the BB shell needs machining to the same level. That way the bearings sit perfectly square with the bottom bracket shell. A tapping and facing tool is the way to achieve this. Cutting oil protects each die from too much wear and tear. They also go in a lot easier. Just a few dabs here and there. If for some reason the threads are really tough and need a thorough cut could be that tapping was never done on the original install , you may need to apply oil several times.

The main target, of course, is the BB shell face, visible where the die enters the BB shell. Once you fully insert the die on each side or just one side if you have that type of tool , the next step is preparation for facing.

The A stands for Asymmetric Integration in this case, this refers to the fact that the rear wheel hub and drive train are off-center in the frame. But the bottom bracket is symmetrical. Since the entire rear of the frame is off-center, we managed to fit a Shimano crank set on these frames, but the arms always seem to hit the chain stay. More research required. The result of all this innovation is that it is virtually impossible to fit an aftermarket crank set on a Cannondale frame.

If you want to transfer your power meter from another bike: tough luck! Kogel Bearings and other bottom bracket manufacturers have designed conversion bottom brackets for the most common asymmetric frames. A standard that is only used on one model of CX frame does not sell in enough volume to justify the tooling and production cost for aftermarket products.
