We ended up descending at Wildcat D via Polecat ski trail at the recommendation of some nice ski lift operators. My legs are toast took me 7 hours 15 min not going particularly fast. Was an awesome hike very steep the whole time. Aggressive and pretty awesome. Check two off list. Awesome hike. Not for the faint of heart or legs.
You really get your workout here. So many up and downs that hurt so much. I added on Carter Dome and it was quite the workout - 3 for 1 special for the 48! Got me 18, 19, and Strava clocked me at 13 miles exactly with total time with over ft of elevation gain. The climb up to Wildcat was intense and was like a stair master on crack.
Hope your quads are strong and you have electrolytes! The climb up to Carter from the Carter Hut was equally as brutal.
Wet day. Good views on the way up, less so between the peaks. Pretty slow and strenuous with the rain. Started from the Glen Ellis side, this approach was not as steep as I thought it would be compared to Flume but being overprepared made for a great hike.
The steep start makes you feel accomplished early into the hike. Very muddy in some sections. Beautiful summit atop Wildcat D.
Wildcat A was less memorable, but still offered amazing views. You'll know you're at the summit A when you see the sign that says "View". One of my favorite hikes of the season. Bagged Wildcat A and D today. Very manageable with raised boards available in most low-lying spots. Lots of pretty wildflowers and insect activity hiking down. Also amazing views of the Tuckerman and Hungtington ravines. Descending via the skil trails killed my knees my suspension is in such rough shape that I resorted to descending some sections in reverse.
I later checked and confirmed this approach saves at least 1. Took a quick stop to take in the views from the ledge, then made my way down around the rock and past a group of middle school age kids and counselors who appeared to be from a rock climbing camp.
The rest of the Square Ledge trail was uneventful. Untied the hiking boots and soaked my feet in the river, ultimately going knee deep to give the knees some relief too. Total trip length 7. Hiked the Wildcats today w my husband and daughter. Not only were the ski trails gorgeous w wildflowers and butterflies everywhere!
Conditions along the top of the ridge were mucky much of the way and I fell once-losing some skin on my leg to an extra slick slab! We met many AT and day hikers along the way and had a great time getting out to A and back. Overall not too taxing a hike using the ski trails LOVE! We finished in 5hrs, 9. Happy to check two more peaks off our 48 list! Definitely liked going up and down the slopes of wildcat D - added some variety in route compared to all woods and offered some awesome views of the presidentials.

Washington and the Presidential Range across the valley. Wildcat "E" is the slight detour in the track through the thick brush to a smaller peak of Wildcat "D" that they used to think was the highest point.
This track was put in here for good measure. Now they believe Wildcat D is higher. After taking some photos from the lookout of the Presidential Range across the valley slip into your skis for a great descent on any of the trails you choose as they all dump out to the parking lot below.
This summit looks deep down into Carter Notch and across at Carter Dome. Parking is free at the resort parking lot.
