He offered to meet and told me they were a group of people who got together for activities centered around learning the language, and they had a yearly convention. I didn't know this was going on," he said. Klingon fans in costumes at the San Diego Comic-Con in Today, the Klingon Language Institute has about 5, guest or free members and about full or paid members, and their 25th annual gathering -- aka qep'a' cha'maH vaghDIch -- took place in Indianapolis in July What happens at the gatherings?

Some go out to places like museums or galleries and speak Klingon, others go to restaurants, while others just have gatherings at home. At our main gathering qep'a' we also hold classes for beginners, and panels for more experienced speakers. Not everyone who attends the meetings is an expert speaker.

Both Okrand and Lispcombe estimate that about 20 or so people in the world have a high enough level of proficiency to hold a conversation purely in Klingon. But many more get by. The advanced grammar is more complex, but I still think it's less complex than other languages.

Klingon is more tricky than difficult, as it does some things that natural languages don't tend to do. One problem is that small talk doesn't come easy in Klingon, as many popular English words intentionally don't have a direct translation. There is no "Hello," for example, and the nearest equivalent is "nuqneH," which means "What do you want? A new beginning. Klingon's popularity is still rising: It is, after all, "the fastest growing language in the galaxy," according to the KLI's website -- and the first season of "Star Trek: Discovery" heavily features the aliens, offering long scenes of uninterrupted Klingon dialogue also available with Klingon subtitles on Netflix outside the US.

If you are interested in learning the Klingon Language, chatting with other new students or just need a quick translation, you can join us in our Facebook Group Learn Klingon and the Klingon Language Institute 's Discord Server. We also recommend the Klingon Language Institute's online course for students that wish to pass the first level of the Klingon Language Certification Program. If you would like a Klingon word of the Day sent to your cell phone, TXT 'follow kwotd' to and follow the instructions.

In Lord of the Rings, ancient forest dwellers talk in Elvish. And in Game of Thrones, nomadic tribes chatter in Dothraki. These made-up languages evoke fictional worlds. Now, fans can learn more about the magic behind all those invented words and phrases by immersing themselves in the history of constructed languages. Constructed Languages from Elvish to Esperanto will give students a chance to study the history, purpose and structure of invented languages.

In the process, students will gain a deeper knowledge of how languages work and insights into how languages can be crafted for different purposes.

He also holds a graduate degree in linguistics from UC Berkeley. He then began learning Esperanto, a constructed language that has more than 2 million speakers. There are so many because they indicate not only the person and number of the subject who is doing but also of the object whom it is being done to. In the "Live long and prosper" translation above, for example, the Da - on SIQ indicates a second-person subject and a third-person object "You endure it" , and the bI - on the verb chep indicates a second-person subject and no object "You prosper".

Klingon also has a large set of suffixes. Attached to the end of the verbs SIQ and chep is the ending - jaj , which expresses "a desire or wish on the part of the speaker that something take place in the future. By piling on these suffixes, one after the other, you can pack a lot of meaning on to a single word in Klingon—words like nuHegh'eghrupqa'moHlaHbe'law'lI'neS , which translates roughly to: They are apparently unable to cause us to prepare to resume honorable suicide in progress.

Just saying a word like this one requires Klingon-like discipline and fortitude. To the layman, the time commitment involved in studying this invented language may seem ridiculous—why not take up a language with practical value, one that might earn you a little respect, or at least not encourage jeers? But Klingon isn't about practicality, or status, or even about love for the original Star Trek series.

It's about language for language's sake, and the joy of doing something that's not easy, without regard for worldly recognition.

Hence the Klingon Hamlet , which took years to compose and which maybe people can appreciate. What a piece of work is man indeed. Arts has moved! You can find new stories here. Load Comments.
