Snake is assured that once he completes his mission, the explosives will be deactivated. Snake flies a Gullfire glider into the penitentiary, landing on top of the World Trade Center.

He takes the elevator down and reaches the streets, following a homing signal from the President's vital signs bracelet. This search leads Snake through an opera house, where he meets the enthusiastic cab driver Cabbie. He continues alone, fends off hostile prisoners, and finds that the President's bracelet is being worn by a drunk. Snake tells Hauk about this development, but he is ordered to continue his search. He is pursued by a group of crazies and seeks refuge in a Chock full o'Nuts , where he encounters a woman who begs him to get her out of the prison.

However, crazies pull her through the floor and kill her as Snake escapes. As Snake exits an alley, Cabbie — who listens to " Bandstand Boogie " on his radio — finds him and fends off the crazies with a molotov cocktail. Cabbie tells him that the President has been taken prisoner by the Duke of New York. Upon meeting Brain, Snake recognizes him as Harold Hellman, a former associate who left him and Fresno Bob for dead four years prior.

Snake offers to get them out of the prison in exchange for their help in finding the President. Back in the streets, Cabbie drives away as the Duke approaches with his entourage, searching for Brain's diagram of the mined 69th Street bridge. Snake manages to commandeer a vehicle belonging to the entourage and escapes with Brain and Maggie.

After a treacherous run down Broadway , Brain leads them to a train yard. Snake sneaks in and finds the President, but is ambushed and captured by the Duke's men. Meanwhile, the Secretary of State orders the Police Force to invade the prison as little to no activity is detected within the prison. The President's tape is taken from his briefcase, which is retrieved from Central Park by a group of Police, containing a note demanding amnesty in exchange for the President.

Brain figures that Snake landed his glider atop the World Trade Center and decides to use it to escape the prison. But Washington believed the landings to be a ruse and split his army between Manhattan and Brooklyn, with the East River between them.

His assessment soon proved wrong. On August 27—one of the loveliest days that summer, the sky dawning clear and bright after a thunderstorm— the British attacked in force. Israel Putnam, with support from Brig. John Sullivan in the Flatbush hills. While the Germans captured Sullivan, most of his men were able to retreat north across the Long Meadow and join well-trained Maryland infantry men under Major Mordecai Gist that had dug in along a ridgeline.

Under pressure from the encroaching British, Stirling also fell back. After sending most of the remaining troops across Gowanus Creek to join the main American position atop Brooklyn Heights, he and Gist led the Marylanders in a rearguard action. And lose them he did— of the Marylanders were killed, either cut down during the back-to-back assaults, slaughtered by the pursuing British and Hessian forces, or chased into the creek to drown.

Fewer than a dozen made it safely to Brooklyn Heights. Thus far in this first significant clash of the war the more numerous and better-trained British had outflanked, outmaneuvered and outsmarted the Americans, forcing their retreat to Brooklyn Heights, where they were effectively trapped between the Redcoats and the East River. The British almost certainly could have finished off the Americans that night and abruptly ended the war, but a cautious Howe halted his troops.

Then nature intervened. On August 28 a heavy storm rolled in, and both sides dug in to await better weather. The deluge continued through the night and into the afternoon of August At that point Howe made a fatal error—electing to wait one more day to launch what he assumed would be the final attack. Even as Howe spread the word to postpone the British as sault, Washington and his commanders decided to disengage and withdraw. The heavy rains, followed by thick fog, gave the Americans the opportunity to maneuver without being observed by the British.

The evacuation, conducted in secrecy and silence, began about 8 p. Washington ordered a rearguard to keep the fires burning atop Brooklyn Heights to dupe the British into believing the Americans remained in camp.

Crewing the evacuee-filled rowboats, barges and canoes were peacetime sailors and fishermen from a recently arrived Massachusetts regiment under Colonel John Glover. Next came the wounded. Then, through the night until just before dawn, they ferried the remaining cold, wet, defeated American soldiers across the river. The last boats pushed off from Brooklyn Ferry at 6 a.

Grabbing a bargaining chip right out of the air, convicts bring down the President's plane in bad old Gotham.

Gruff Snake Plissken, a one-eyed lone warrior new to prison life, is coerced into bringing the President, and his cargo, out of this land of undesirables.

The world's greatest leader is a hostage in the most dangerous place on Earth. Now only the deadliest man alive can save him. Did you know Edit. Trivia Kurt Russell has stated that this is his favorite of all his films, and Snake Plissken is his favorite of his characters. Goofs During the sequence where Snake is being chased by the Crazies and is about to shoot an oval pattern in a wall so he can break through , his eye patch shifts enough to reveal a perfectly good eye.

This is commonly regarded as a mistake, but it is not; the novelization of the movie explains that Snake still has his left eye, but he wears the patch due to a paralyzed iris, making it extremely sensitive to light. Quotes Bob Hauk : You going to kill me, Snake? Crazy credits The Avco Embassy logo does not appear in this movie. Alternate versions Collector's edition laserdisc during director commentary shows cut scenes of high-tech bank robbery which led to Snake's conviction and eventual prison sentencing to New York.

Connections Edited into The Needle User reviews Review. Top review. Classic anti-hero. Snake Plissken is the classic anti-hero, ala Clint Eastwood's Man-with-no-name. Plissken is a walking ball of anger and a survival machine. He fought for his country but had everything taken from him, so he started taking back. Now, he has to rescue a man he doesn't care about, if only to survive long enough to take his revenge on Hauk and the government. John Carpenter's film is a masterpiece of dark humor, suspense, and great characters.

Plissken represents, in a fashion, the Vietnam vets who did their job, even if they didn't agree with or understand their war, but came back to nothing. The film's novelization explores these themes better than the movie, but it is hinted at in Hauk's briefing. It also depicts a fascist police state, one that some would say is not too far from reality.

Kurt Russell is excellent in what was a breakout performance for him. Up to this point, Russell had been stuck in low budget comedies, following the end of his Disney days. This performance, coupled with another collaboration with Carpenter, Elvis, led to bigger and better roles.

Russell channels Clint Eastwood to give Snake a menacing, if laconic quality. Much like a real serpent, Snake watches and strikes when he is ready; with speed and impact. Russell is able to say a lot with little dialogue, through his body language and facial expressions.

The supporting cast is wonderful. Adrienne Barbeau is the beautiful, but deadly Maggie.
