When do planes descend - irm

When flying under Instrument Flight Rules IFR , the decision to begin descending is made by Air Traffic Control based on air traffic, destination conditions, airport traffic, and more. This will usually end up being roughly minutes before the scheduled landing time at the destination. This is because it takes a while for a plane to reach landing conditions. Here at SkyTough, we are focused on providing only the best, most helpful content to our readers.

To ensure that we do this every time, we combine our own knowledge and experience with the opinions of others in the industry to provide the full picture. Especially on longer flights, it sometimes seems like they just go on forever.

As a passenger, it can be almost impossible to know where you are in the sky. Even so, how do they know when they can start descending as they head towards the airport? Too fast of a descent rate can cause potential pressure changes in the cabin, it can scare passengers, and Air Traffic Control ATC might think you have an emergency. The vast majority of all commercial flights operate under IFR, under which ATC will dictate when to begin your descent based on air traffic, the conditions at the destination airport, airport traffic, and more.

Under VFR, pilots of small aircraft will typically use their onboard systems to come up with a descent rate of feet per minute fpm as they cruise into the airport. So in this example, it would probably be a good idea to add an extra FPM to your descent rate to make sure you get down in time. Whether you're trying to impress your passengers with a smooth descent to the airport, or you're trying to make sure you meet an altitude restriction with ATC, the rule takes the guesswork out of descending, and makes you look like a pro.

Can a planes wings fall off? The entire aircraft is basically designed to allow the wings to bend in turbulence without compromising any structural integrity.

Milena Witzman Pundit. How dangerous is flying turbulence? Clear air turbulence is the most dangerous kind, as it occurs in cloudless skies with perfect visibility—so oncoming turbulence cannot be picked up by weather radar.

This leaves little to no time for the flight crew to warn passengers to return to their seats and buckle up. Lukene Weihmann Pundit. Why do planes land at an angle? Q: Is there a certain angle used to land a plane safely? Does it vary when various flight controls are in use? A: The normal descent profile is approximately 3 degrees. This can vary, but during the final stages of landing, 3 degrees is usually the target. Wind can vary the groundspeed and descent rate, but the descent angle remains the same.
