Who's "we"? Who is asking you to write this essay? I see that you have a consistent theme here: History means learning from the past, and especially from past mistakes.

What do we learn by knowing that people used to die from the common cold for which there is still no vaccination? Avoid slang terms like "coolest" when writing class assignments. What laws exist now that didn't exist before? Have there really been no genocides since?

That's okay. Together we e-mailed my eighty-year-old grandfather, and he was happy to relate some of his experiences. He had landed on a Normandy beach three days after D-Day, June 6, He was expert at talking French farmers into contributing eggs to the war effort, for instance.

My grandfather was neither a general nor a fighter. His story was not the most dramatic of the war, but it was real and it belonged to my family. History is important to me, to all of us, because without it our lifelines have no beginnings and no ends. History contains all that we are and will be, helping us to understand that what we must face today has probably, in some form or fashion, been faced before.

History makes us aware of ourselves and the world around us, enabling us to accept what are sometimes difficult and painful truths. What's historical to me, could be little more than a rock pile in the way of a four-lane highway to another person. That means that history is basically a written account of an event that affects something. I have yet to fully understand what he had told me but I sort of get the idea. Writing this essay really made me think that there is a lot of history in the world. To me history is everything that has happened before the present. In order to decipher what it means to be an American you have to look at the past and what has brought this freedom upon us.

Early in America's history we faced certain periods of segregation. Going back through history you start to realize and view things differently. That is what it is to be an American. This goes to show yet another example of what it means to be an American.
