They contain some of FFXIV's most enjoyable content and it's integrated through the main questline, so you don't necessarily have to go out of your way to find it. But dungeons throughout the game are designed to gradually ramp up in complexity and difficulty as the game goes on, steadily teaching you the things you need to know. The matchmaking system makes the process of getting a party together very simple for these instances. The FFXIV playerbase is so often accommodating to newcomers, especially in story-based dungeons and trial boss fights--which are fairly low-pressure in ARR and Heavensward at this point.

I mostly attribute this to Daily Roulettes--this is a system that high-level players use to earn bonus perks like big chunks of XP or currency. Roulettes put them into queues to run a random dungeon. What this does is widen the pool of players available to matchmake with, so even a level 80 player is incentivized to run the first level 15 dungeon again alongside a newcomer if they happen to match into it.

This system ensures that you're never left without others to play alongside, many of which are veterans who can lead the way. I know that all might be a lot to take in, so in the interest of being succinct, I have a few broad pointers that'll help you get your bearings when you start out.

Every class and job is designed to succeed regardless of the situation. As mentioned, as long as you know how to use your actions and skills, you will be okay. Tank has most responsibility in dungeons and boss fights--generally, they need to draw the attention of enemies at all times and take most of the damage, hence the name.

They dictate the pacing and often control a boss's position. It's a very rewarding role, but not recommended for MMO newcomers. Healer has to keep the party alive, but mainly focuses on the Tank who absorbs most damage.

If the Tank goes down, it's likely the party will go down. It's simple to grasp in the early stages, though keep in mind that the Healer has a significant responsibility. DPS has to worry about dealing as much damage to enemies as possible while avoiding enemy attacks. It's the most straightforward role as you're left to focus on executing your attack rotation to the best of your ability. Matchmaking sorts through the required roles for each dungeon and boss fight.

For you, it's just a matter of playing your part. It's the fastest way to level up and necessary to get to all of the game's content. While ARR doesn't have the most enticing story in the first half, it's a decent time that builds toward something much greater.

You'll always know what's next for MSQ and where that quest is located with the label at the top-left of your screen. Like MSQ, you'll always know when the next class quest is ready and where it's located from the top-left of your screen. When you first jump into FFXIV, you'll be overwhelmed by its number of menus, most of which won't be necessary for you to engage with early on. Just know that you'll need to use the map to find MSQ locations, the inventory for items, and the character screen to equip stuff and check your gear.

XIV even lets you make some dialogue choices to drive home that this is your story. Pictured above is a screenshot of my beautiful Au Ra black mage, whom I would die for, with her totally canon boyfriend Aymeric, whom I would also die for, to serve as supporting evidence for this claim.

The quality of all that content is something that, even as a critic, I struggle to accurately lavish enough praise for, so it really is the biggest bang for your buck right now. But if it does, get the complete collection and pay the affordable subscription.

On the bright side, this is partly what fuels the comparatively friendly atmosphere: You can often correct a poorly performing player with a smart piece of advice. FF14 players play on individual servers, which are grouped into specific data centers.

Specific data centers exist for North America, Europe, and Japan, but you can create a character on any of them regardless of where you live. If you want to play with friends who already play FF14, you'll have to be in the same datacenter with them.

Otherwise, you'll never see or be able to talk to them in-game. For that matter, adding friends across servers is a bit of a pain in the ass because you both have to be online at the same time. It requires some out-of-game coordination. Socially, at least, it's one of the big downsides of playing FF14 compared to World of Warcraft or Elder Scrolls Online, where there's usually a way to talk to or group with friends regardless of which server they're on. Data Centers have their upsides in terms of options.

In my case, I play on the Ultros server, which puts me in the Primal data center. By going to any of the big Aetheryte crystals in the three major starting cities, I can travel to any of the seven other servers on my data center, either to find better prices for items on those servers' market boards or to participate in organized "Hunts" with other players.

Because Final Fantasy 14 doesn't let you access certain zones or expansions until you're at a specific spot in the story, reaching the level cap of 80 can still take hundreds of hours—even in the wake of the extensive streamlining in Patch 5.

Square Enix lets you work around this by buying a number of boosts on its Mog Station site. Just to emphasize: If you're a new player and you want to start playing the Shadowbringers expansion today, you'll have to buy all that.

Pressed for time? I recommend skipping at least A Realm Reborn. You miss out on a ton of the story if you buy all of them, of course, so you won't have much of a clue about the dynamic between characters when you arrive in Shadowbringers. Fortunately, Shadowbringers is largely a self-contained story. That said, you can watch all the major cutscenes by going to an inn and interacting with a piece of furniture labeled "The Unending Journey.

If you want to play with high-level friends close to the level cap now or you simply don't want to slog through so much story , though, this is the way to go. You can always go back and unlock dungeons, trials, and raids that weren't included with the boosts later on. As a reminder, one of the coolest things about Final Fantasy 14 is that you can play every single combat and crafting class on the same character. All you need to do is switch out your weapon and set up gear presets in your character panel.

Here's a rundown of all the combat classes, which I've grouped into FF14's own groupings of tanks who keep enemies from attacking other players and can take a lot of damage , healers who heal , and DPS classes that mainly deal damage. They're tanks here, though, and they make for pretty good ones, too. Paladin: Paladins are your classic "sword and board" tanking class. If you're into no-nonsense, easily understandable tanking, this is the way to go. If a player chooses to sub for 3 months they will receive a small discount and if they choose to subscribe for 6 months they will only have to pay a fee equivalent to to purchasing the Entry subscription for the same amount of time.

Unlike many other games that limit players to only playing the game with players on the same platform, players on FFXIV will be able to interact and enjoy the world with players of all platforms, though if a player wants to play on multiple devices they will have to buy a copy for each device. It should be noted that a player will also have to buy all of the expansion packs on their various devices if they wish to play on them as logging out in an area on one device that you do not have on another will make it impossible to login until the player moves.

Players can also head to the Square Enix store to purchase the game. After players have bought the base game and the expansions they are interested in they will have to head to the Mog Station in order to purchase their subscription or to make extra purchases like cash shop items, extra retainers or name changes.
