Winston finds the greatest pleasure in life from his work. He works as a clerk at the Records Department in the Ministry of Truth, and his job description entails rewriting historical documents to match the current Party affairs and paint Big Brother in a perfect light. He hates the Party for the apathy created in him, for the dissappearance of his family, and for the recreation of truth. He hates the Party later in the book because it makes it difficult to experience a relationship with Julia.
He hates the Party in the end because they worked hard to break and torture him. Winston trusts Julia because she would have arrested Winston or have arrest him by now which she hasn't.
Julia is attracted to Winston because he is a "bad boy" and hates the party. Winston and Julia even travel to O'Brien's home, where O'Brien manipulates them into believing that he is a member of the Brotherhood. Winston pledges his allegiance to the Brotherhood and accepts Emmanuel Goldstein's book. Winston is utterly surprised and disheartened to learn that O'Brien is a government spy. In the novel by George Orwell, Winston is both a hero and an antihero because he does not have the typical traits that would make him a hero , although he is only trying to stop the reign of Big Brother.
Why does Winston consider himself a dead man? Because he is guilty of thoughtcrime, and he knows he will be found out eventually. Winston writes that the proles are where hope lies. If there was hope , it MUST lie in the proles , because only there in those swarming disregarded masses, 85 per cent of the population of Oceania, could the force to destroy the Party ever be generated. The Party could not be overthrown from within. Why does Winston think the proles are immortal? Because they can survive through the regime of the Party and will exist long after the Party is gone.
However, O'Brien is really an agent of the Thought Police, which has had Winston under surveillance for seven years. Winston and Julia are soon captured. Winston remains defiant when he is captured, and endures several months of extreme torture at O'Brien's hands. In , Winston thinks about renting the room above Mr Charrington's shop because of the difficulties that he and Julia experience in trying to have a relationship. These feelings arise as a result of the Party's control over the intimate lives of its members.
O'Brien comes to his conclusion because he knows that proles are really stupid. They are given more freedom and privacy, and yet they do not take the best of them, ie they do not read books and educate themselves, they do not even question the differences between the present and the past; thus they will never revolt.
