I did buy some flannel wondering how that would rip into strips, and it did fine. So, when it comes to other fabrics to use, I would probably not use fleece unless you plan to cut the strips with scissors. I have my doubts that you can rip fleece. If you use a couple of different materials, then divide the 4 yards into however many you use. So, I used two different fabrics, so I bought 2 yards of each. So, if you had four choices, make sure to buy 1 yard of each. Does this make sense? That is totally up to you, depending on the look you want for your wreath.
I like the rough, frayed look, so I ripped my strips. Then hold the left side of the material in place and pull the right side up with your right hand. The fabric will rip nicely.
I found that sometimes the fabric will stop ripping, and I had to add a little snip at the top of the tear. I find the best selection of fabrics is at Joann Fabrics. But, on average, you will need about 16 yards of ribbon for a ribbon wreath. Prepare your flowers, cutting tools, wire and tape to begin with. Grab your base stems and begin grouping and wiring these to the frame.
The task is best achieved by grouping artificial flower stems at a time and attaching them to the frame. I had a little extra left, so if you use a 16in wreath form or larger, you might want to get just a little more fabric. Start by folding your fabric in half, meeting the longer edges together.
Using scissors, make cuts along the length of the fabric every inch or so. Unfold the fabric and rip into strips using the cuts as guidelines. There will be little threads from doing this — I like to pull them off as I go to clean up the fabric, but you can also leave them if you want a more scrappy rag look to your wreath. Now you will need to cut the strips in half to make them 9 inches long.
I find it easiest to grab a few at a time, fold them in half and cut. I like to create a pattern with my fabric, but you could also just tie them on any which color to make it more random.
