You indicated that it HAS helped you.. It may be that you require a slightly higher dose on the days you will be in angst producing surroundings. Again, it is good to discuss with your doc all of the options out there for you Depending on how severe your anxiety is, and how badly it is impacting your daily life While I'm a big proponent of medications for most people Let us know what the doc says Just an FYI It is not just a "heart" pill, even though that is one of its mechanisms of action.

One of the more commonly precribed beta blockers for anxiety, blushing, etc Also, Atenolol as mentioned by ava above is another common choice. I was recently trialed on atenolol for anxiety and labile hypertension.

As I have mild asthma my doctor was rather cautious. After 1 week, I noticed that the anxiety was much less. With the blood pressure, it sometimes worked and if I am not mistaken once I got the highest ever systolic reading at home whilst on atenolol.

I was okay until I came down with the cold and I think the cold and the atenolol must have triggered my asthma. I agree with nursegirl that beta blockers are often used to treat GAD and social anxiety and many musicians use it to cope with performances. It is not addictive and really great for people who have a rather fast heart rate.

Only my therapist mentioned that she had got many of her patients off beta-blockers and onto an SSRI or Zyprexa. According to my ex-therapist, beta blockers are 'safety' tools and as long as people with anxiety take them, they will not overcome their anxiety. But it is okay for a SSRI, isn't that a 'safety' measure as well.

I don't see her logic. Some people just need a blocker as their resting heart rate is normally too high. As for long term use, the only thing I am aware is that "beta-blockers can "tip" someone prone to diabetes into that range of high blood sugars".

You should also avoid drinking alcohol, because it can decrease the effects of beta-blockers. As seen in figure 1, the most commonly prescribed beta-blocker medications are metoprolol succinate and metoprolol tartrate. While both drugs are used to treat heart-related issues, their applications are very different. Beta-blockers can cause lung muscle spasms that make it difficult to breathe. This is more common in people who have lung conditions. High blood sugar hyperglycemia.

Beta-blockers can trigger high blood sugar in people with diabetes. Side effects commonly reported by people taking beta blockers include: feeling tired, dizzy or lightheaded these can be signs of a slow heart rate cold fingers or toes beta blockers may affect the blood supply to your hands and feet difficulties sleeping or nightmares.

Most people who take beta blockers do well and experience no side effects. But because beta blockers slow your heart, they may make you feel tired. I haven't thought too much about that before recently crazy I know..

But I just wondered whether anyone else experiences the same? It's really whenever I don't take them I just feel pressure in my chest and my heart thumps and races sometimes. I intend to go. I have read about beta blockers causing heartburn, I don't Think it is heartburn but I'm going to try gavisgon.

It just worries me that I have been taking them so long I have developed angina without knowing and now I Have to take the beta blockers to calm the angina? I would Massively apreciate advice from people who have been taking beta blocked for a prolonged amount of time, or anyone really. If anyone has any instances of taking beta blockers for a long period of time and how it has affected them I would be really greatful.

Posted 7 years ago. I would see your g. If anyone else reading this has taken beta blockers for a fair while, or even knows more than me I know shockingly little about them sadly, I have done my research but can't seem to find many people who have taken them for a while , I would love to hear from you!

Thank you. So i guess this isn't so much about advice but more along the lines of reassurance, or i hope it is anyway. I know I've not been taking it as long as you but i did get exactly what you described within a short time of starting to take propranolol.

I'd just like to add that before taking propranolol I never suffered with any of the above so I know for sure it was the meds, but also that I'm not in the slightest aware of what normal side effects are coming off of Propranolol either, and this is the first time I've taken a beta blocker so apart from the above i don't really know much else about them. I think thank frick that's what it was as my mum. But I think it's that heartburn is made worse by stuff like that.

So if you ever have it again it's called rinitidine I'm only having side effects now after 7 years of being on them! In a recent review, the authors outline the significant impact that environmental factors can have on the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Keshan disease is a condition of the heart muscle that may occur as a result of a selenium deficiency. It can be severe, but it is treatable. A twice-yearly injection of a new drug could lower cholesterol levels and prevent thousands of deaths from heart attacks and strokes, NHS England says.
