Assessing whether customers really needed bereavement flights or were trying to game the system was tough, though, so most airlines have done away with this option. Only a few major North American airlines still offer bereavement flights, and they may not prove to be the most affordable options in your circumstances. Delta is the only major airline operating within the United States that advertises its discounted bereavement flights.
It offers these discounts for both domestic and international travel. Some restrictions apply. The loved one must be an immediate family member, and Delta offers a list of the relationships that qualify. It's a fairly extensive list that includes step-siblings and in-laws. You may only book a bereavement flight that departs within seven days of the person's death, and you must provide the name of the deceased and a phone number for a funeral home, hospital or hospice that can confirm the person's death.
Delta does not offer bereavement flights on its website. You must call its main reservations line to book bereavement flights, which are subject to availability. The airline waives service charges for the bereaved, which makes it easier for you to change your flights at the last minute if plans change. However, they vary in price, and are subject to availability. When you are able to book one, though, it will offer some flexibility on the best published fare on your route.
Plus, if you need to make unexpected changes to your travel plans, the standard change fees are waived. Something to bear in mind: Delta bereavement flights are only offered to SkyMiles members, though Delta gives you the option to enrol immediately on their Bereavement Policy page. Air Canada bereavement flights offer a discount when traveling during a time of family emergency, but your journey must begin within seven days of booking for international travel, or ten days for domestic travel ie, within North America.

You can contact the Lufthansa reservations office in the US on , or the one in Canada on The WestJet bereavement discount is available on Econo, EconoFlex and Premium fares, but travel must be completed within a period of 14 days. American Airlines ended their bereavement fares in , but they may waive change fees if your travel plans shift due to the passing, or imminent passing, of a loved one.

Southwest does not offer bereavement flights — but they may also waive change fees if you need to make a last-minute alteration to your travel plans because of a family emergency. Instead, they will refund change fees for travel plans affected by family emergencies. This can be done by submitting a refund request online. No, JetBlue does not offer a bereavement discount.
